Yesterday we took the train to Yokohama to visit the German Christmas Market! It was awesome! We're getting more and more comfortable navigating the trains here. We only had one connection on the way home where we weren't exactly sure if we were on the right one, but we were. Phew!
 |
| We all look tired and we haven't even stepped on the first train yet! Cub woke up with a yukky runny nose so we weren't sure how the day would go. He was a champ though! |
Yokohama is right on the coast, it's beautiful! We didn't explore the city very much since we got a late start, so we'll have to go back another time. I was surprised to see a "London Eye" looking ferris wheel downtown.
The market was just off the water in between some cool brick buildings (that turned out to be restaurants and shopping). Here's a picture when we were leaving.

| No ice skating for us this year, but it was entertaining to watch! |
The market was surprisingly busy so it was hard to check out the booths that were set up. Bonj had to scope out each drink and food option, he was hoping to find a souvenir gluhwine Christmas mug, but no luck. We did end up with usable sized beer mugs though (our glasses ended up packed into storage, so we looked at this as an investment for our house here).

| Prost! |
 |
| This little cub devoured his pretzel and the ladies next to us had a good laugh. |
At the end of the market was a big Christmas tree and a platform with some bells on it. Naturally our cub had to get his hands in on the action. He was gung ho until it started ringing and then I think it surprised him how loud it was. Then he stood there and waved at the crowd.
Once it got dark the lights came on and it was beautiful! We sat and ate dinner next to a mother and son who were very friendly (and the mother spoke English really well). I told her she was the first person to speak to us in English since we've been here. She said it was because she was drinking. Haha! Her son thought our cub was so funny and kept asking his mom things about him. I didn't get a picture with them though.
Another great trip in our first few weeks here in Japan. We're planning on another outing today, so we'll see where we end up! Rumor has it the Imperial Gardens are open to the public, which only happens twice a year, so we might have to jump on a train into Tokyo!
LOVE your photos! I'm so surprised that they have a Christmas German Market?? How far away is Yokohama? How long are you on the train? Are things post in English when you are on the train?
ReplyDeleteYokohama was about an hour train ride (it's about 20 miles). Some things are in English on the trains. It depends on which line you get on. We use GoogleMaps to figure out the trains.
DeleteYour blog takes me back to when you lived in Europe and you would send me postcards. Remember? Then I hung them all on a wall in my office with a map so I could feel like I was on the journey with you. Wow - how time flies and look how technology has changed the way we can share our experiences!
ReplyDeleteHard to believe that was 12 years ago! Much easier to communicate now than it was then. You'll have to find a map of Japan now!
